WHO WAS
ALEXANDER?

The Alexander Technique is a special form of health re-education.  It is concerned with thinking in activity.  It teaches us:
  • To be consciously aware of how we 'use' ourselves as we go about our daily activities
  • To recognize the difference between poor use and good use
  • To understand that a too quick reaction to a given stimulus seldom provides the best result
  • That to take time to think consciously of how best to react to that stimulus will bring about a more satisfactory outcome
  • That the head, neck and back relationship is of primary importance

In Alexander Technique lessons we learn:
  • To direct our movements with conscious control in order to gain lightness and freedom throughout the body
  • To use ourselves more efficiently each day, raising the level of co-ordination, health and general well being
  • That taking responsibility for our own health creates many benefits, including improvement of short term memory

Being empowered with this knowledge is not only beneficial in respect of the more tangible health improvements that can be brought about with use of the Technique, but can also bring a growing sense of self worth and purpose to each day.

The Alexander Technique has been around now for over 100 years.  It was 'discovered' by an Australian actor, Frederick Matthias Alexander, who suffered from persistent voice and breathing problems on stage, as well as general ill health.  Obtaining very little help from conventional medicine, an absolute determination to find the real root of his problems led him to discover certain fundamental truths about human activity, co-ordination and movement.

Over many years of observation of himself, he began to understand that habitual patterns of misuse involving the whole of his body and mind were the cause of his problems.  Over the years he discovered how to consciously change these patterns of use and developed a Technique which not only eliminated his vocal problems, but also brought about remarkable improvements in his general health.  He began teaching others and came to London in 1904, setting up a teacher training school therafter.  His work has spread all over the world since.
